The Kafanchan Chief Judge has released 3 inmates under the prerogative mercy of Governor Nasir Elrufai.
The Chief Superintendent of Correctional Service in charge of Kafanchan centre, Mathias Dzuzu, confirmed this to newsmen shortly after the visit of the Kafanchan High Court Judge.
Dzuzu said the three inmates freed included those above 60 years who had health challenges and only a few months to see out their sentences.
He noted that the Kafanchan High Court Judge, Samuel Daka, granted bail to six other inmates after reviewing their cases.
According to him, the Kafanchan facility currently had over 100 inmates with a capacity to hold 220 inmates.
“This facility was calibrated to take 110 inmates previously but modifications have been added to it and if you recalibrate it, it will take about 220 inmates.
“But as it is today, we currently have over a 100 inmates here,” he added
LEADERSHIP reports that a total of 72 inmates in Kaduna State were released by Gov. Nasir Elrufai in line with Presidential directive to decongest prisons amid the coronavirus pandemic.
