How mangoes can help you lose weight

Read on to know what are the benefits of eating mangoes and how can it help one lose weight!

 Storehouse of nutrients

We all have been advised by our parents and family doctors that consuming seasonal fruits is very important. This is because consumption of seasonal fruits has been associated with reduced risk of many lifestyle diseases. Mangoes being summer speciality are a storehouse of essential nutrients including carbs, protein, fat, fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B-6, folate, magnesium, iron and antioxidants.

Moderate GI index

Glycemic Index of a food tells how that food affects the glucose level of a person. Mango has a GI between 41-60, 51 on an average. Foods with less than 55 GI are considered low GI foods while the ones having GI more than 70 are considered foods with high GI. If taken in moderation, mangoes are safe even for diabetic people.

Mangoes and weight loss

You must have heard a lot about how mangoes can make you gain weight. But if taken in moderation, mangoes can help you lose weight.

We have heard more about mangoes and weight gain because here in India, people eat mangoes after a meal or with the meal, which basically means consuming some extra calories. A medium sized mango is approximately 150 grams. The additional calories will obviously lead to weight gain.

But replacing your unhealthy snacks with a mango or maybe a meal can surely make one lose weight. It’s always better to have mangoes in place of snacks and unhealthy foods in order to promote weight loss.

Eating mango before a workout session

Eating a mango 30 minutes before a workout session keeps you energetic and lets you perform better. Mango is an energy fruit with high content of carb, vitamin C and vitamin B-6 in it.

How to recognise an artificially ripened mango

To ripen the mango faster, many dealers use calcium carbide. This substance can cause many health problems. Most ripened mangoes have black and white patches on their skin, which would be shrunk.

 The study
A study published by ‘Nutrition Research’ in April 2008 found that overweight people who ate higher amount of fruits lost more weight than those who ate fewer fruits or did not eat any. Consumption of 100 grams of fruit every day leads to an additional weight loss of 0.3 kg in six months, says the study.
Verdict

Eating mangoes won’t lead to any weight loss if you eat them over what you eat already. To lose weight, you need to eat them in place of an unhealthy food or snack. Fruits and veggies help create a calorie deficit, so does mango. And the basic step to lose weight is to create a calorie deficit, which means burning more than what you are eating.
