Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny has been ruled out of this summer’s World Cup, the French Federation has confirmed.
Koscielny suffered a serious injury early in Arsenal’s 1-0 Europa League semi-final loss at Atletico Madrid on Thursday.
He was stretchered off the field and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said after the game the 32-year-old may have ruptured his Achilles tendon.
France coach Didier Deschamps announced on Friday that Koscielny, who has 51 caps, will have to sit out the World Cup.
“It’s a very big blow for the French team,” he said on the federation’s website. “An injury never comes at the right time.
“I am really very sad for Laurent because this World Cup was also a very important moment for him in his career.
“I wish him a lot of courage and a good return to the field because I’m sure he still has some great things to show,” Deschamps added.
