A suicide bomber belonging to the Islamist terrorist group al-Shabaab killed at least 17 people inside a police training academy in the Somali capital Mogadishu, a government official said Thursday.
At least 17 others were injured when the attacker, dressed in a police uniform under which he wore an explosives vest, entered the academy and blew himself up, according to Foreign Minister Yusuf Garad Omar.
Earlier on Thursday, the police placed the death toll first at seven, then at 13.
Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the blast on pro-insurgent radio station Anadlus shortly after the attack, saying it killed 27 people.
Al-Shabaab regularly launches attacks on government buildings, hotels and restaurants in the volatile nation on the Horn of Africa.
The group is seeking to establish an Islamist state in Somalia and is affiliated with the international al-Qaeda terrorist network.
