Former Brazilian national footballer Robinho was Thursday sentenced by an Italian court to nine years in jail for taking part in the 2013 gang rape of a woman in Milan.
The court ruled that Robinho, who played for AC Milan at the time, along with five other men, raped the woman in a nightclub, the ANSA news agency reported.
The men plyed the 22-year-old Albanian woman with alcohol and assaulted her when she became defenceless.
“We clarified that he already defended himself from the charges, claiming that he had no participation in the episode,” a statement posted on Robinho’s Instagram account said. “All legal steps are being taken.”
Robinho had previously been accused and aquitted of rape in 2009 when he played for Manchester City.
